On Saturday, December 25th, the nation commemorated the 97th birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was born on 25th of December 1924 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.
The
occasion has been commemorated as Good Governance Day every year since 2014.
Since 2014, the birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been commemorated as Good Governance Day.
Term as Prime Minister of India
Mr. Vajpayee served India as Prime Minister on 3 occasions. The first period was for 13 days in 1996, then for 13 months from 1998 to 1999 and then for a full 5 year term from 1999 to 2004.
Mr. Vajpayee was a co-founder of the Bharatiya Janata Party and a key leader of the party (BJP).
He was a member of the Hindu nationalist volunteer organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He was the first Indian Prime Minister to serve a complete term who was not a member of the Indian National Congress. He's also known for being a poet and a writer.
He has received the Padma Vibhushan award and the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, which he received in 2015.
Initiatives
India conducted the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998 while he was Prime Minister. Vajpayee travelled to Lahore by bus to meet with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in order to enhance diplomatic relations with Pakistan. Following the 1999 Kargil War with Pakistan, he attempted to mend fences with President Pervez Musharraf by inviting him to Agra for a meeting.
On the occasion of his birth anniversary on Saturday, BJP veteran and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee received glowing honours, with the Saffron Party initiating a special "special micro donation campaign."
The memorial was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior BJP figures, including Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah, as well as BJP Chief J P Nadda.
