Constitution Day of India (Samvidhan Diwas)

The First Step We, the People, Took

The Constituent Assembly conducted its first session 71 years ago today. The constitution-making process itself teaches us about the power of hope, active individual leadership, diversity, and disagreement.

The 26th of November is designated as Constitution Day, also known as National Law Day, to honor the adoption of India's Constitution. The Indian Constitution was enacted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, and it went into effect on January 26, 1950, which is known as Republic Day in India.

As part of the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,' the Constitution Day is commemorated in the Parliament's center hall today. Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and other dignitaries attended the event, which was presided over by President Ram Nath Kovind.

As part of the celebrations for Constitution Day, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju also launched an online course on the subject of the Indian Constitution on November 25.

Significance of Constitution Day:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the 26th of November to be Constitution Day in 2015. Today, in the Parliament of India Samvidhan Diwas was commemorated.

The statement was made as part of a year-long commemoration of Dr. B R Ambedkar's 125th birthday. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about the Indian Constitution and its principal architect, Dr. B R Ambedkar. The Constituent Assembly took 2 years, 11 months & 17 days to complete this historic task of drafting the Constitution of India.

History:

The Constituent Assembly, which was charged with drafting the Constitution, met for the first time on December 9, 1946. The Assembly spent nearly three years drafting the document, with more than 114 days dedicated solely on finalizing the draft's content.

On December 13, 1946, then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru proposed the "Objectives Resolution," which was ultimately adopted as the Preamble on January 22, 1947.

The Drafting Committee, one of the Constituent Assembly's roughly 17 committees, was chaired by Ambedkar. The mission was to draft a country's draft constitution. Out of the 7,600 changes submitted, this Committee rejected 2,400.

Ex-AAP Minister Kumar Vishwas tweeted in his own way on this day:

Jai Hind ... Jai Bharat ...
